Physiotherapy and Yoga

Yoga  is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice or discipline. There are a variety of schools, practices and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism (including Vajrayana and Tibetan Buddhism) and Jainism. The best-known are Hatha yoga and Raja yoga.
The origins of Yoga have been speculated to date back to pre-Vedic Indian traditions, but most likely developed around the sixth and fifth centuries BCE, in ancient India's ascetic circles, which are also credited with the early sramana movements. The chronology of earliest texts describing yoga-practices is unclear, varyingly credited to Hindu Upanishads and Buddhist Pāli Canon, probably of third century BCE or later. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali from first half of 1st millennium CE is one of a key surviving major texts on Yoga. Hatha yoga texts emerged around 11th century CE, and in its origins was related toTantrism.
Yoga gurus from India later introduced yoga to the west, following the success of Swami Vivekananda in the late 19th and early 20th century. In the 1980s, yoga became popular as a system of physical exercise across the Western world. Yoga in Indian traditions, however, is more than physical exercise, it has a meditative and spiritual core. One of the six major orthodox schools of Hinduism is also called Yoga, which has its own epistemology and metaphysics, and is closely related to Hindu philosophy.

Physiotherapic help in a Stroke

After a stroke, muscles may not remember how to perform actions that were once simple, like sitting and walking. A stroke patient will need to relearn these skills with the help of physical therapy. Physical therapy retrains muscles and reminds them how to work together again.

Physical Therapy: Success Through Strength
Physical therapy involves using and strengthening the muscles, even before   the patient can do this on their own. Therapists use both active and passive range-of-motion and strengthening exercises. Active exercises are ones the patient performs unassisted; passive exercises are performed or aided by the physical therapist. Both types help strengthen muscles.
The physical therapist will create an exercise program for the patient to follow so that muscle strength can be maintained and new skills won't be lost.

About Physical Therapy

Modern physical therapy was established towards the end of the 19th century due to events that had an effect on a global scale, which called for rapid advances in physical therapy. Soon following American orthopedic surgeons began treating children with disabilities and began employing women trained in physical education, massage, and remedial exercise. These treatments were applied and promoted further during the Polio outbreak of 1916.

Physical Therapist

The primary physical therapy practitioner is the Physical Therapist (PT) who is trained and licensed to examine, evaluate, diagnose and treat impairment, functional limitations and disabilities in patients or clients. Currently, most Physical Therapist education curricula in the United States culminate in a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, but many currently practising PTs hold a Master of Physical Therapy degree and some hold a Bachelor's degree.

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a form of laser medicine used in physical therapy and veterinary treatment that uses low-level (low-powerlasers or light-emitting diodes to alter cellular function. Other names for the therapy include low-power laser, soft laser, cold laser, biostimulation laser, therapeutic laser, and laser acupuncture. Whereas high-power lasers ablate tissue, low-power lasers are claimed to stimulate it and to encourage the cells to function.

Cortical remapping , defined as neuronal reorganisation within the higher centres of the brain, secondary to cortical neuroplasticity, is a common feature of many chronic pain states  and has more recently been documented in  chronic low back pain . Extensive Cortical remapping has been identified in areas known to be involved in pain processing (‘the pain neuromatrix’) , somatosensation  and motor planning . Brain imaging studies in  chronic low back pain  patients have demonstrated significant changes in neurochemical profile, neuroanatomy , cortical representation, and cortical responsiveness [15], with the magnitude of change seen to be proportional to symptom chronicity and the level of associated depression or anxiety. Whether these changes are cause or effect in  chronic low back pain  has yet to be established, however, there is growing opinion that maladaptive neuroplastic changes within the central nervous system may play an important role in symptom generation and perpetuation in  chronic low back pain.
